How to find your wifi password

Securing your Wifi with a robust password means using a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols. It's no wonder many ask, "What is my Wifi password?" or "How can I find my Wifi password?" when trying to connect a new gadget or share the network with guests.

If you've misplaced your password or simply can't recall it, don't sweat it. Below, we provide step-by-step guidance to help you retrieve your password from your computer, phone, or service provider.

Finding your wifi password on computers and laptops

You can retrieve a saved wifi password on your Mac in two main ways:

1. Through Keychain Access App:

  • Navigate to Applications, then Utilities.

  • Open the Keychain Access app.

  • On the left sidebar, select System and ensure the box for "Show Password items" at the bottom is checked.

  • In the main area, look for the network name you want. It'll be a list, so you might need to scroll.

  • Double-click your network name. This will open a new window.

  • Check the “Show Password” box at the bottom.

  • You will be prompted to enter your Mac's username and password. After doing so, the wifi password will be displayed in the "Show Password" box.

2. Through the Terminal on Mac:
  • Use Spotlight (Cmd + Space) to search for and launch the Terminal app.

  • Enter the following command, replacing <WIFI Name> with the exact name of your Wifi network (keep the quotation marks): security find-generic-password -ga "<WIFI Name>" | grep "password:"

  • You will likely be prompted to enter your Mac's username and password. After authenticating, the Terminal will display the wifi password.

1. For Windows 10:

  • Right-click on the wifi icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen).

  • Choose "Open Network & Internet settings."

  • Under the "Change your network settings" section, click on "Network and Sharing Center."

  • In the Network and Sharing Center, next to "Connections," you'll see your wifi network's name. Click on it.

  • In the wifi Status window, click on the "Wireless Properties" button.

  • Navigate to the "Security" tab.

  • Check the "Show characters" box, and the password will be revealed in the "Network security key" box.

2. For Windows 7/8.1:
  • Open the Control Panel (you can search for it from the Start menu)
    .
  • Click on "Network and Sharing Center."

  • In the "View your active networks" section, next to "Connections," you'll see your wifi network's name. Click on it.

  • In the wifi Status window, click on the "Wireless Properties" button
    .
  • Navigate to the "Security" tab.

  • Check the "Show characters" box, and the password will be revealed in the "Network security key" box.

These are general instructions and should work for most users. However, the layout or settings might vary slightly depending on the exact version or update of the operating system and customizations by PC manufacturers.

Finding your wifi password on your phone

Every time you connect to a new wifi network using your smartphone, the password automatically gets saved for future use. Here’s how to find your home wifi password on your phone:

If you have Android 10 or anything newer, you can find the wifi password directly on your phone following these steps:

  • Go to “settings” on your phone, then “wifi”.

  • Select “saved networks” and click on your home network.

  • Choose the share option and enter your password.

  • A barcode will appear with the wifi password written below.
While iPhones are designed to not reveal any saved passwords on your device, you can still locate your wifi password by finding the IP address for your router on your iPhone. You must also be connected to your wifi network to obtain the password. Once you’ve done so, follow these steps:

  • Click on “settings” on your iPhone, then “wifi”.

  • Select the “i” next to your network name.

  • Scroll down and select “DHCP tab”, there you’ll see an IP address where it says router. Make sure to write the IP address down for the next steps.

  • Open the Safari browser on your iPhone and type in the IP address.

  • Enter “admin” for both the username and password.

  • Select “wireless settings” to find your password next to the security key field.

Finding your wifi password with your Internet provider

If you’re a Cox customer with an internet plan or Panoramic Wifi, you can find your password with these steps:

  • Check the device's owner's manual.

  • Find the password on the bottom or side of the physical router.

  • Check the Cox Welcome Kit booklet.

If you updated your password when your internet was installed, you can:

  • Open your preferred browser and type your router’s IP address (located on your router) into the address bar.

  • Enter “admin" for the username and password. Alternatively, the password may be “password" or there may be no password.

  • Click on “wireless” and locate the password next to the Key 1 field.
If your router is provided by your internet service provider (ISP), the default wifi password is often printed on a label attached to the router. If you've changed this password and need to find it:

  • Launch a web browser and enter the router’s IP address, which should be indicated on a sticker on your router, into the address bar. Common default IP addresses include 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, but yours might differ.

  • You'll be prompted to log in. If you haven’t personalized these credentials, you can try using “admin” for both the username and password. However, the default login information may vary based on your router's brand and model. If "admin" doesn't work, refer to your router's manual or the ISP's website.

  • Once logged in, navigate to the “wireless” or similar section. Look for fields labeled as "Wifi Password", "Wireless Key", or "WPA Key". The exact name might vary based on the router's interface.

Note: Always be cautious when accessing and changing router settings. If you're uncertain, consider reaching out to your ISP's customer support or checking the user manual specific to your router model. If you've altered the default router login details and can't recall them, a router reset might be necessary, which would also reset your personalized settings.
